Why Learning English is Different for Adults
The adult brain doesn't absorb languages like a sponge anymore, but adults have an advantage: they can structure patterns, recognize rules, and stay goal-oriented. Here is Steve Hoca's proven method for preparing students in London and Turkey for UK visa exams.
1. Never Start Without a Clear Goal
"Learning English" is too vague. A real goal is: Passing the A1 Spouse Visa exam in 3 months. Or Achieving a B1 GESE Merit. A precise goal shapes your daily action plan.
2. Ditch Passive Listening, Start Active Speaking
Watching series or listening to podcasts passively without speaking is a common trap. SELT exams only measure speaking and listening, so 70% of your prep must be spoken practice.
- Practice 25 minutes of loud speaking every day. Record and listen to your voice.
- Try saying the same sentence in 5 different ways.
- Simulate real exam conversations with a teacher at least once a week.
3. Don't Get Bogged Down in Grammar Books
For A1 to B1, you only need 4 core tenses: Present Simple, Present Continuous, Past Simple, and Future forms. Using these perfectly is far better than using advanced grammar incorrectly.
4. Focus Solely on Your Specific Exam
"General English" can waste valuable visa prep time. If you need GESE Grade 2 (A1), practice the 6-minute dialogue, basic questions, and visual queues. For B1, practice the 5-minute Topic Discussion section thoroughly.
5. Repeat and Reinforce
A new word takes about 7 to 10 repetitions to become permanent. Use apps like Quizlet, physical flashcards, or a notebook to review vocabulary daily.
6. Run Regular Mock Tests
Take at least 2 mock tests per week starting a month before your test. Mock practice reduces anxiety and builds confidence.
Summary: Ready in 90 Days
- Days 1-30: Core vocabulary and 4 key tenses.
- Days 31-60: Exam-specific format practice.
- Days 61-90: Weekly mock tests and feedback.
